Fear. We all feel it. Whether it’s standing on the edge of a mountain,
launching a new business, or having a tough conversation, fear can be paralyzing.
But here’s what I’ve learned: fear doesn’t have to hold you back.
In fact, it can propel you forward if you know how to use it.
On my journey as a climber, I’ve faced fear at every turn — fear of failure,
fear of injury, fear of the unknown. But each time,
I discovered that the most powerful thing I could do was face my fear head-on, use it,
and turn it into fuel for success.
Here’s how you can make fear your fuel:
10 Steps to Making Fear Your Fuel
- Acknowledge It The first step is simple: recognize that fear is real. You can’t move forward until you accept that fear is a part of the process.
- Understand Its Source Dig deep. What is your fear really about? Often, it’s not the mountain itself but your doubt in your ability to climb it. Pinpoint the root.
- Shift Your Perspective Fear is just energy. Instead of letting it paralyze you, channel that energy into focus, preparation, and action.
- Focus on the Present Fear often arises from the “what-ifs.” Instead of imagining every worst-case scenario, focus on the task at hand. Control the now, and the future will take care of itself.
- Use Fear as a Motivator When I’m scared, I use that feeling to push myself harder. Fear can be your greatest motivator if you let it. Let it fuel your next step.
- Break It Down Fear can be overwhelming when you look at the big picture. Break your goal into smaller steps, and tackle each one without looking too far ahead.
- Take Action Anyway The best way to fight fear is to act. Even the smallest step forward reduces fear’s grip on you. Action builds confidence and diminishes doubt.
- Embrace Discomfort Climbing a mountain isn’t comfortable, and neither is facing your fears. But growth only happens outside your comfort zone. Embrace discomfort and keep moving.
- Reframe Fear as Excitement Fear and excitement are two sides of the same coin. When you feel fear, reframe it as excitement about what’s ahead. That shift in mindset can make all the difference.
- Celebrate Every Victory Every time you face your fear, celebrate it. Whether you succeed or learn from it, each step forward is a victory. The more you celebrate, the more you’ll crave facing fear head-on.
The WYE Challenge
This week, identify one fear you’re currently facing in your life or work.
What small action can you take to move through it? Use that fear as fuel to take the
first step forward and share how you’re using it to push yourself.
