I learned that lesson in NFL locker rooms, in boardrooms, and high above 20,000 feet on some of the world\u2019s most demanding mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n

I set out to climb the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each continent and ultimately completed the challenge with my ascent of Mount Everest in 2021. Along the way, I discovered that the qualities required to reach the top of a mountain are remarkably similar to those required to lead a team, build a company, navigate adversity, and achieve ambitious goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

No CEO or executive reaches the summit alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

The strongest leaders surround themselves with people who possess different skills, perspectives, and strengths. They create an environment where people trust one another and understand that individual success is connected to team success.<\/span><\/p>\n

During my years in the NFL, I saw this firsthand. Talent matters, but championships are built by teams that communicate, trust each other, and execute together.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Preparation Creates Confidence<\/b><\/h2>\n

Training, conditioning, equipment, logistics, nutrition, route planning, weather analysis and mental preparation all matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may have spent months preparing. You may have traveled thousands of miles. You may be only a few hundred feet from the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

Growth doesn’t always happen in dramatic leaps. Often, it comes from consistently doing the right things\u2014even when the results aren’t immediately visible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone needs to understand the plan. Everyone needs to know what is happening. And everyone needs to feel comfortable speaking up when something doesn’t look right.<\/span><\/p>\n

Poor communication creates confusion, duplication, resentment, and missed opportunities. Great communication creates alignment.<\/span><\/p>\n
