For years, my life was all about pushing myself to the limit.
From the NFL to building a business, and eventually conquering the Seven Summits,
it was all about the grind, the hustle, and the pursuit of bigger goals.
But somewhere along the way, I realized something important:
success isn’t just about how much you can achieve—
it’s about how well you balance it all.
When I was focused solely on my career, I felt invincible.
I was conquering every mountain, both literally and metaphorically.
But then came the moment when everything collapsed—the business failure,
the personal struggles. It became clear: I had neglected my own well-being.
That’s when I learned the true value of balance. It wasn’t enough to just work harder
or achieve more. I needed to take care of my body, mind, and relationships.
I needed to slow down to speed up.
So, how did I find that balance? Here’s what I’ve learned about managing
work and life, and how you can too.
10 Steps to Developing the Ultimate Work-Life Balance
- Prioritize What Matters Most. Focus on the things that align with your core values. Identify what truly matters in your personal and professional life, and make those your priority.
- Set Boundaries—And Stick to Them. In the NFL, business, and mountaineering, boundaries were essential. Whether it was off-time or personal space, I had to learn when to switch off and recharge.
- Schedule Time for Yourself. Create space in your schedule for self-care, whether it’s meditation, reading, or just being present. These moments of rest are what fuel productivity.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Say No. Saying yes to everything leads to burnout. Learn to turn down opportunities that don’t align with your goals or values. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a strength.
- Delegate Tasks and Trust Your Team. Trying to do everything yourself is a recipe for exhaustion. Delegate tasks to others and trust your team—whether at work or in your personal life.
- Invest in Relationships. Professional success is hollow without fulfilling relationships. Make time for your family, friends, and loved ones, because they provide the support you need to keep going.
- Embrace Flexibility. Life is unpredictable. Being rigid doesn’t help. Stay open to change and adjust your schedule as needed, while still keeping your goals in sight.
- Practice Mindfulness. Whether I was climbing mountains or leading teams, mindfulness kept me grounded. Take a moment to breathe, be present, and focus on the task at hand.
- Celebrate Small Wins. It’s easy to get caught up in chasing the next big goal, but remember to celebrate the small victories along the way. These moments of acknowledgment fuel your motivation.
- Rest is Part of the Process. Rest is often undervalued, but it’s just as important as hard work. I realized that without proper rest, the climb to success is much harder. Make rest a priority.
