10 Steps to Overcoming Your Fear of Change

Mark here.

When I first transitioned from the NFL to business, I was terrified.

The world I knew was football, team dynamics, and the adrenaline of competition.

Suddenly, I was faced with a new challenge: building a company from scratch.

The stakes were high, and the fear of failure weighed heavily on me.

But here’s the truth: change is inevitable. It doesn’t matter how successful or

experienced you are—life will throw curveballs that force you to evolve.

What sets successful people apart isn’t the absence of fear, but their ability to

embrace change despite it.

When my business collapsed, I found myself at another crossroads—

this time in mountaineering. The fear of the unknown was paralyzing.

The mountains were unforgiving, and every step was a reminder that I was

far outside my comfort zone.

But I learned something crucial: Fear isn’t something to avoid—it’s something

to move through. Overcoming the fear of change has been the cornerstone of every

challenge I’ve faced.

10 Steps to Overcoming Your Fear of Change

  1. Acknowledge the Fear, Don’t Avoid It. Fear is natural. Acknowledge it, but don’t let it control you. The sooner you face it, the sooner you can move forward.
  2. Shift Your Perspective on Change. Instead of seeing change as a threat, reframe it as an opportunity. This mindset shift can transform fear into excitement.
  3. Start Small—Don’t Try to Change Everything at Once. Big changes can be overwhelming. Start with small steps to build your confidence and momentum.
  4. Trust Your Adaptability. You’ve faced challenges before, and you’ve adapted. Trust that you can do it again—whether in business, sports, or life.
  5. Lean into Discomfort. Comfort zones are where dreams go to die. Growth happens when you step outside of what’s familiar.
  6. Surround Yourself with Support. Change is less daunting when you have a support system. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your ability to adapt.
  7. Break the Change Down Into Actionable Steps. Instead of focusing on the entire journey, break it into smaller, manageable tasks. One step at a time takes you closer to your goal.
  8. Don’t Fear Failure—Embrace It as a Learning Opportunity. Every failure is a lesson in disguise. It’s not the failure that matters; it’s how you respond to it.
  9. Visualize Success. Visualize yourself thriving after the change. Picture how overcoming the fear will positively impact your life and fuel your motivation.
  10. Commit to Constant Growth. Change doesn’t stop. Commit to continuous growth, and you’ll find that what once felt impossible becomes your new normal.
