{"id":6553,"date":"2026-09-03T20:37:48","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T20:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markpattisonnfl.com\/?p=6553"},"modified":"2026-09-03T20:37:48","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T20:37:48","slug":"mark-pattison-on-leadership-lessons-from-the-nfl-locker-room-to-mount-everest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markpattisonnfl.com\/mark-pattison-on-leadership-lessons-from-the-nfl-locker-room-to-mount-everest\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Pattison on Leadership: Lessons From the NFL Locker Room to Mount Everest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership is often discussed in conference rooms, boardrooms and business books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some of the most important lessons about leadership are learned when the stakes are high, the conditions are difficult and there is nowhere to hide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I learned those lessons in two very different environments: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/markpattisonnfl.com\/\"><b>NFL locker room<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and high on the world&#8217;s tallest mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spent five seasons playing in the NFL. Years later, I set a new personal goal: climbing the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each continent. On May 23, 2021, I stood on the summit of Mount Everest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environments could not have been more different.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 data-rm-block-id=\"block-6\"><b>Mark Pattison The NFL Player to Keynote Speaker<\/b><\/h1>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One involved football fields, coaches, teammates and 60-minute games. The other involved extreme altitude, brutal weather, exhaustion and decisions that could literally determine whether you made it home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the leadership principles were remarkably similar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you are leading a professional sports team, a company, a family or yourself through a difficult chapter, the fundamentals remain the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the leadership lessons I learned from the NFL locker room to Mount Everest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-11\"><b>1. Leadership Starts With Taking Responsibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the NFL, there is nowhere to hide for long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-13\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss an assignment, someone sees it. If you don&#8217;t prepare, your performance usually exposes it. If you make a mistake, the team has to deal with the consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-14\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true on a mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-15\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can blame the weather. You can blame fatigue. You can blame another climber. But ultimately, you are responsible for your decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-16\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great leaders understand this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-17\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They don&#8217;t spend their time looking for someone to blame. They ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-18\"><b>What can I control?<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That question is incredibly powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When things go wrong, leaders who take responsibility create confidence around them. Their teams know that they will not disappear when circumstances become difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership isn&#8217;t about being perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-22\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s about owning the outcome and learning from it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-23\"><b>2. Your Team Can Take You Further Than You Can Go Alone<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-24\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Football is the ultimate team sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-25\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can have tremendous individual talent, but one player cannot win an NFL game by himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same lesson became even more apparent in mountaineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-27\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climbing Mount Everest isn&#8217;t simply about reaching the summit. It requires planning, preparation, guides, Sherpa support, communication, logistics and an enormous amount of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-28\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a mountain, you quickly learn that individual ego can become dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-29\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need people who know things you don&#8217;t know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-30\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need people who will tell you the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-31\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you need people you can trust when you&#8217;re exhausted and the consequences of a bad decision are enormous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-32\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best leaders understand that their job isn&#8217;t to have every answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-33\"><b>Their job is to build a team capable of finding the answers.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-34\"><b>3. Preparation Creates Confidence<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-35\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest misconceptions about success is that confident people simply have more confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-36\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, confidence is often built through preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-37\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFL players spend countless hours preparing for games that may last only a few hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-38\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You study the opponent. You practice plays. You condition your body. You review film. You prepare for different situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-39\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountaineering requires the same discipline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-40\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You train for months and years. You learn how your body responds to altitude. You study the route. You understand weather patterns. You practice technical skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-41\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, when the moment arrives, you draw on the preparation you&#8217;ve already done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-42\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This applies to business leadership as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-43\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re walking into an important negotiation, presentation, board meeting or difficult conversation, preparation gives you something incredibly valuable:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-44\"><b>the confidence to perform when pressure arrives.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-45\"><b>4. Great Leaders Know When to Push and When to Stop<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-46\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may be one of the most important leadership lessons I learned in the mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-47\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a difference between <\/span><b>persistence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>recklessness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-48\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In sports, we&#8217;re often taught to never quit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-49\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s an important lesson\u2014but leadership requires another dimension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the smartest decision is to change course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-51\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Everest, conditions can change quickly. Weather, altitude, fatigue and other factors can turn a seemingly manageable situation into a dangerous one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-52\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good leaders recognize that changing the plan isn&#8217;t necessarily a failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-53\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it is wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-54\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The business world needs this lesson, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-55\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A leader who refuses to change because they are emotionally attached to an original plan can put an entire organization at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-56\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The strongest leaders remain committed to the mission while staying flexible about how they get there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-57\"><b>Be stubborn about the goal. Be flexible about the path.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-58\"><b>5. Communication Is a Leadership Skill Not a Soft Skill<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-59\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the NFL, communication can happen in seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-60\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quarterback and receiver may have to make adjustments without saying much at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-61\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A linebacker may need to communicate a change before the snap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-62\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone needs to understand their role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-63\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a mountain, communication becomes even more important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-64\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people are tired, cold and under stress, assumptions can become dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-65\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders have to communicate clearly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-66\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is responsible for what?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-67\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the plan?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-68\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has changed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-69\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the risks?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-70\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens next?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-71\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same principles apply inside companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-72\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many leadership problems aren&#8217;t actually talent problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-73\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>communication problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-74\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best leaders make expectations clear, listen carefully and create an environment where people feel comfortable telling the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-75\"><b>6. Reliability Is One of the Most Underrated Leadership Traits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-76\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talent gets attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-77\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reliability builds trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-78\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an NFL locker room, you want to know that the person next to you will do their job when the game gets difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-79\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a mountain, that trust becomes even more important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-80\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want people around you who are dependable when circumstances aren&#8217;t ideal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-81\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership isn&#8217;t simply about inspiring people when everything is going well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-82\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s about being the person others can count on when things go wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-83\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-84\"><b>Can my team count on me when the pressure increases?<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-85\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the answer is yes, you&#8217;re building one of the most valuable forms of leadership capital there is: trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-86\"><b>7. Adversity Reveals Character<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-87\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone can look like a leader when things are going well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-88\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real test comes when things don&#8217;t go according to plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-89\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve learned that adversity has a way of stripping away the unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-90\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you&#8217;re exhausted on a mountain, you don&#8217;t care about titles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-91\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You care about the next decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-92\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You care about your team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-93\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You care about getting through the challenge safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-94\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business leaders face their own versions of adversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-95\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A company misses its numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-96\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major client leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-97\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deal falls apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-98\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key employee resigns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-99\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-100\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A personal setback affects your confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-101\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those moments reveal leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question isn&#8217;t whether adversity will happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-103\"><b>The question is who you will become when it does.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-104\"><b>8. Don&#8217;t Confuse Experience With Learning<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-105\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing in the NFL taught me a tremendous amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-106\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But simply experiencing something doesn&#8217;t automatically make you better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-107\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to reflect on the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-108\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s one of the reasons I believe strongly in asking questions after difficult experiences:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-109\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What worked?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-110\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What didn&#8217;t?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-111\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did I miss?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-112\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would I do differently?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-113\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did this teach me about myself?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-114\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experience becomes valuable when you turn it into insight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-115\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same principle applies to leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-116\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your career is filled with lessons\u2014but only if you take the time to recognize them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-117\"><b>9. Your Biggest Summit May Be the One Nobody Else Can See<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-118\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I decided to climb the Seven Summits, the goal was obvious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-119\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone understands what climbing Mount Everest means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some of the most important summits in life aren&#8217;t visible from the outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-121\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They might be:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-122\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting over after a career ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-123\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building a new company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-124\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovering from failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-125\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming a better parent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-126\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding purpose after retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-127\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a risk later in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-128\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having the courage to pursue something you&#8217;ve always wanted to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-129\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your summit doesn&#8217;t have to be Mount Everest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-130\"><b>Your summit is whatever meaningful goal challenges you to become a better version of yourself.<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-131\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is the philosophy behind my work and my book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding Your Summit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-132\"><b>10.
