It is built around people who know how to perform together.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 data-rm-block-id=\"block-52\"><b>Everest Lessons in Resilience: What Climbing the World&#8217;s Highest Mountain Taught Me<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-53\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 23, 2021, I reached the summit of Mount Everest, completing the Seven Summits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-54\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seven Summits are the highest mountains on each continent. Completing them required years of preparation, physical effort, mental discipline, and the ability to manage uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-55\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everest is a particularly powerful teacher of resilience because the mountain does not care how ambitious you are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-56\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can have a goal, a plan, and a tremendous amount of motivation. But the mountain still presents challenges that must be respected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-57\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lessons I learned on Everest are directly relevant to leaders and teams navigating difficult circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-rm-block-id=\"block-58\"><b>1. Big Goals Must Be Broken Into Smaller Steps<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-59\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing at the bottom of Mount Everest and thinking about reaching the summit can be overwhelming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-60\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mountain is enormous. The risks are real. The journey requires patience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-61\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot climb Everest in one step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-62\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You climb it through a series of smaller objectives: preparing at base camp, moving through the Khumbu Icefall, reaching higher camps, acclimatizing, and eventually making a summit attempt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-63\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true in business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-64\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An organization may have a massive five-year vision. A leadership team may be pursuing a major transformation. A company may be trying to double revenue or enter a new market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-65\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vision matters. But the team must also know what needs to happen today, this week, and this quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-66\"><b>Break the mountain into manageable steps, and the summit becomes more achievable.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 data-rm-block-id=\"block-67\"><b>2. Resilience Requires Knowing When to Adapt<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-68\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important lessons in mountaineering is that conditions can change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-rm-block-id=\"block-69\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weather, terrain, health, and timing can all affect a climb.
